Cakilli - Çakıllı - Чакъллъ - Τσακίλλι
The town, formerly known as Cakalondon, is located on the old Kirklareli-Istanbul road, D20. The oldest inhabitants of Cakilli were the Thracians of ancient times. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Evliya Celebi described the town in the 17th century as a settlement where Turks and Greeks lived together. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, Turkish refugees migrated from Bulgaria and settled in Cakilli. Cakilli was declared a town in 1969.
In the center of the town, there is an 820-year-old historical plane tree. The tree, a species of Eastern Plane (Platanus Orientalis), is protected by the General Directorate of Natural Assets Protection. Additionally, one of the sources of the Ergene River is located near the town.
