The district is in the central part of Edirne and in the southwest corner of the Lalapasa plateau. It is surrounded by Uzunkopru districts to the east and southeast, Ipsala districts to the south, and Greece with a 56 km border to the west and north. The district takes its name from the Meric River and consists of 2 towns and 21 villages.
The natural borders of the district are drawn by the Ergene River to the southeast and south, and the Meric River to the west and north. The district lands consist of undulating plains and plains between these streams. The average altitude above sea level is 34 meters. The highest point is 133 m.
The population of the district consists of Turks who came and settled from Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Albania during and after World War I.
The district's people earn their living from agriculture. The main agricultural products are rice, wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets, and legumes. Small amounts of apples, grapes, pears, sesame, and barley are also grown in the district, and animal husbandry is also practiced. There are rice mills and cheese factories in the district. Basketry is a traditional handicraft of the district's people.
The town of Meric, a small border settlement with little development and constant migration, is 89 km from the provincial capital, Edirne.
There are no historical structures worth seeing in the district. The district is attractive for flying and hunting. Important events for domestic tourism are the Beykoy Dalligi and the spring festival known as Mayalar.
