Kofçaz - Kofcaz - Кофчаз - Κοφτσάζ
Kofcaz is one of the least populated districts of Turkey with its district center population. The district center, which is half an hour away from Kirklareli center by car, is located in the middle of a forested area on the Istranca Mountains with an altitude of approximately 700 meters. Kofcaz is a complete mountain settlement with its small streams, trees and all its natural assets. The number of visitors coming from outside is also very low in the district where economic activities are very limited.
It is not known exactly how old the history of Kofcaz, which has few visitors, dates back. The city, which faced Bulgarian and Greek occupations in recent history, last remained as a settlement center on the Bulgarian border of Turkey. Although it is not by the sea, it has the potential to be a place to go for those who want to escape from the noise of the city on the weekends with its forests and tranquility. Forest products are also important sources of income.
Kiırklareli is the smallest district of the province. It is located 26 kilometers from the city center, north of Kirklareli. Kofcaz is situated at the foothills of the Istranca (Yildiz) Mountains and is located in the middle of forested areas.
The district, which was annexed to the Ottoman Empire in 1369, is not known exactly when it was established. In the early years of the Republic, it took its place in the administrative division as a sub-district center under the name "Kesirlik" and became a district in 1959 under the name Kofçaz.
The district, which has a generally mountainous and rugged terrain, has a surface area of 471,500 decares and an altitude of 640 meters. Streams originating in the district land join together to feed the Kayali Dam. A typical continental climate prevails. Winters are cold and rainy, while summers are hot and breezy.
The famous Alevi poet Hayrani is from the district's Karaabalar village, while Serif Bodur is from the village of Topcular. Topcular village is famous for its annual "Topcu Baba Festival." Kofcaz is a region of Kırklareli where Alevi-Bektashi folklore and culture are concentrated. According to folklore, it is believed that the tomb of the dervish Gulbaba is located in the region.
