Havsa - Havsa - Хавса - Χάβσα
As you drive along the Thracian plains pregnant with abundance, sometimes you enter Havsa watching the canola fields with their warm yellow tones, sometimes the ears of barley and wheat full. If it is summer, sunflowers are smiling on your right and left. If, while coming from Uzunkopru towards Havsa, you have come across farmers entrusting their rice grains to the wind more often, know that it is autumn now.
At the junction where you reach the modest bus station of the district, giant sunflower figures symbolizing the district's embrace of agriculture and soil welcome visitors. You will have a general idea about the vision in which the district positions itself. However, you can only begin to follow the traces of Havsa's historical texture when you dive into the streets of the district.
Whether you are going to Edirne from Istanbul or Canakkale, Havsa, a district 27 km away from the province, welcomes you. Well; it is possible to reach Edirne by alternative roads passing through the edge of the district without entering Havsa, but Havsa is like the key to Edirne's door. Although the name Havsa seems to be a bit overshadowed when compared to districts such as Uzunkopru, Kesan, Enez and Ipsala, which have made a name for themselves in Edirne, if you try to get to know Havsa, you will come across a sparkling district with a deep-rooted history.
The district of Havsa, affiliated with Edirne province, is located 27 km east-southeast of the province. Its neighbors are Uzunkopru to the south, Suloglu to the north, Pehlivankoy to the south-southeast, and the surrounding Kırklareli provincial center and Babaeski districts of the same province.
Boasting the fertile Thracian plains to the north of the Ergene basin, the district boasts a geographical structure composed of peneplain hills shaped by small streams running north-south that feed Ergene. The district's elevation above sea level is 32 meters and covers a territorial integrity of 545 km2.
The district's economy is based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Some agriculture-based industries have also been established. The main crops grown are wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets, grapes, rice, rapeseed, barley, melons, and watermelons. Among these, wheat and sunflower production are high. Sheep and cattle are the most common livestock in the district, from which dairy products are obtained. There are facilities in Havsa that process animal products and agricultural products.
Havsa was founded by the Romans as Niki. A small village during the Byzantine period, Havsa was annexed to the Ottoman lands during the reign of Sultan Murat I, and the area was renamed Hoşa. The Greeks living here migrated to Istanbul and Thessaloniki, and later immigrants from Anatolia were settled here. Havsa developed further with the settlement of Sokollu Mehmet Pasha in the 16th century. After Sultan Bayezid II's wife, Hafize Sultan, settled here, the district was briefly called Hafse, later evolving into Havsa.
During the War of Independence, it was occupied by the Greeks. It was liberated from this occupation on November 4, 1922. Havsa, a sub-district before the Republican era, was elevated to district status in 1954.
