Kırcaali - Kardzhali - Кърджали - Κάρτζαλι
Kardzhali is a city in Southern Bulgaria. It is 47 km from Hasköy, 84 km from Smolyan, 95 km from Plovdiv, 111 km from Stara Zagora, 243 km from Sofia, 78 km from Komotini and 383 km from Istanbul.
Kirdzhali is situated in the heart of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, on both banks of the Arda River. The nearest other regional city is Hasköy, about 50 km away, and the ancient rock city of Perperek (also known as Perperikon), declared an immovable cultural heritage monument of national importance since 1968, is about 15 km from Kardzhali. The Pan-European Transport Corridor passes through Kardzhali via the Makaza Pass. The distance from the regional center to the Makaza-Nympheia border checkpoint on the border with the Hellenic Republic is 54 km.
The city is 243 km from the capital Sofia, 95 km from Plovdiv, 376 km from Varna and 260 km from Burgas.
Valuable natural habitats of the evergreen Thracian oak, Scots pine, blue juniper and primrose have been preserved. The region's landscape contains some of the most valuable tree and plant species listed in the Bulgarian Red Book.
The region's climate is continental Mediterranean, mild and humid, with many sunny days a year. Winters are relatively mild, with average temperatures around 0°C. Summers are sunny and hot, with highest temperatures reaching 40°C. The longest sunshine hours in Kardzhali occur in June, July and August.
The Arda River flows through the city. The basin area is 5,795 km². Three dams have been built along the river: Kardzhali, Studen Kladenets, and Borovitsa.
There are large deposits of lead and zinc ores, bentonite, perlite, zeolite, asbestos, precious and semi-precious minerals, and gold. The municipality also has significant deposits of non-metallic minerals: bentonite, zeolite, trass, feldspar, mica, limestone, sand, gravel, etc.
